Chief Judicial Magistrate M. Srinivasan on Tuesday discharged former Minister S.M. Velusamy and his wife G. Banumathi in a disproportionate assets case registered by the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC).

Mr. Velusamy was Minister for Commercial Taxes and Housing in the AIADMK government during 2001-2006. In 2006, when there was a change of guard in the State, the DVAC had registered the case against him under sections 13 (2) and 13 (i), (e) and (2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act and against his wife under section 109 (abetment of offence).

The case was registered on October 26, 2006 and searches were conducted on 11 premises belonging to Mr. Velusamy on October 27. The CJM said that there was no satisfying evidence to prove the charges.
