Anti-Corruption Movement, Coimbatore, has written to the Corporation Commissioner alleging that contractors in-charge of parking lots and public toilets fleeced customers.
In its letter the organisation also alleged that the Corporation officials connived with the contractors, who collected over and above the stipulated fee.
To ascertain that the allegations were true, when an Anti-Corruption Movement team parked vehicles and used the public convenience facilities on November 20, it had found that the contractor in-charge of the parking lot on Gandhipuram 8 Street collected over and above the stipulated amount. Likewise, the contractor at the parking lot at Cholakadai Mukku, on Raja Street, Thiyagi Kumaran Market, the public convenience facility at the Lala Lajapathy Street-Gandhipuram 8 Street junction, at the public convenience facility on the eastern side of Platform No. 1 one in the Gandhipuram Mofussil Bus Terminus, at Platform No. 3 in the same bus terminus and at the foot-over bridge near the bus stand exit collected more than the amount the Corporation had fixed. Furnishing a list of a few more places, the Movement said it had also furnished photocopies of receipts the contractors had given the team to substantiate its allegations.
Irregularities
It also revealed that the officials with powers to check the irregularities had failed to discharge their duty.
The Movement asked the Commissioner to look into the allegations, punish the errant officials and protect the interests of the public.
