Farmers seize lorries, take it to Coimbatore collectorate

February 27, 2014 12:07 pm | Updated May 18, 2016 11:09 am IST - COIMBATORE:

Villagers from Kuppepalayam, Kattampatty and Viraviampalayam on Monday drove three lorries they had seized from their villages in to the Coimbatore Collectorate after they found the lorry drivers dumping waste sand from moulding units in the area.

Sources said that after taking control of the lorries, the farmers had reportedly got in touch with the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board officials but as they allegedly did not respond, the farmers, in anger, drove the lorries to the collectorate to complaint about the moulding units dumping waste earth with impunity. The farmers complained that the dumping of waste affected the ground water and agriculture in the area. The farmers’ action led to a wordy duel with the Revenue Department officials.
