Kerala Agriculture Value Added Product Research and Development Centre (KAVPRAD) has urged coconut farmers and entrepreneurs to start coconut water bottling plants.

Baiju Nedumkery, founder, KAVPRAD, told journalists here on Monday that the company had got a patented technology to process and bottle coconut water and has thus far sold it to 28 entrepreneurs in South India.

With an investment of ₹ 3.50 lakh, including ₹ 1 lakh towards licensee fee for technology transfer, entrepreneurs could easily set up a plant to process coconut water for 1,000 bottles of 200 ml each.

Profitable business

It would be a profitable business at this point in time in Tamil Nadu because of the popular protest against aerated drinks by multinational companies and traders decision to boycott the sale of such drinks.

In Tamil Nadu, KAVPRAD had a licensee in Karur who was doing well in business. It was a ‘desi’ alternative to foreign brands, Mr. Nedumkery said and added the bottled coconut water would have a shelf life of two months.
