G. Thirumurthi, a farm worker from Vedapatti, petitioned the district administration on Monday seeking financial assistance from the government to support the education of his two children. His daughter T. Yamuna, a ninth standard student, and son T. Logesh, a seventh standard student, accompanied him.

Thirumurthi said that his wife, also a farm worker, died of snakebite while at work on October 26, 2015. “We used to get work for three to four days a week and could make Rs. 600 a day. Now I am finding it difficult to run the family with my earnings,” he said. The farm labourer claimed that this year he found it difficult to pay more than Rs. 32,000 as fees for his children in a private school in the city. “I obtained a loan for Rs. 10,000 and am facing difficulty in repaying it,” he said.
