District Collector (in-charge) P. Kumaravel Pandian has called upon elected representatives of the local bodies and officials to ensure that only eligible persons get the benefit of welfare programmes.

Participating at the gram sabha meeting held at the Villarasampatti panchayat, near here, on Saturday, he said that the State Government was implementing a number of development and public welfare programmes. Concerted efforts should be carried out by the local administrations and members of the gram sabhas to ensure that the benefits of these programmes reached eligible persons, he stressed.

Mr. Kumaravel assured the people that the district administration would process the petitions seeking basic amenities without any delay. Interacting with the people, he directed the officials to create adequate sanitary facilities in the village. He asked them to follow the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi and strive hard to achieve self-reliance at the village level.

Officials from various departments, village panchayat officials, elected representatives and members of self-help groups attended the meeting.

Meanwhile, officials said that gram sabha meetings were held in the remaining 229 village panchayats in the district to mark Gandhi Jayanthi.
