A first year engineering student of a private institution in Madukkarai committed suicide at her hostel room on Thursday night. P. Mahalakshmi’s relatives who arrived in the city on Saturday from her native Pappireddipatti in Dharmapuri district staged a protest in front of the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital alleging that she was forced to commit suicide.
They complained that Mahalakshmi, who had her school education with Tamil as the medium of instruction, was insulted by a faculty of the institution for not replying in English and that had demoralised her. Prior to committing suicide, she had called them up and shared her sorrows. The Madukkarai police have registered a case in this connection.
