Emergency evacuation drill at Coimbatore airport

A simulated crash landing of an aircraft was enacted at the airport on Monday to check the emergency preparedness.

According to K. Peter Abraham, Airport Director – Coimbatore, the drill was carried out with simulated crash landing of an aircraft with a total of 80-passengers on board.

Team work

The exercise lasted for about 90 minutes in which the participating disaster management team removed three “dead bodies”, and rescued 15 passengers with serious injuries and 20 with minor injuries. As many as 42 passengers escaped unhurt.

A total of 300 personnel were involved in the drill.

Airports Authority of India, Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services, Airlines, Central Industrial Security Force and Tamil Nadu Police were involved in the drill.

Co-ordination

A situation of this nature required co-ordination among all agencies and the objective was to identify areas of strength as well as weakness, Mr. Peter Abraham said.
