Coimbatore District Collector Archana Patnaik has suggested measures to expedite infrastructure projects, mainly road works, in the district.

Officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the State Highways Department participated in the meeting held by the District Collector here on Tuesday, apart from officials from the related departments such as revenue.

On the NHAI projects, the feasibility study for widening of NH 209 from Dindigul to Sathyamangalam into a four-lane road is yet to be completed. With heavy traffic on the road, it is becoming essential to take up some works on the stretch.

In the case of six-lane works on NH 47, the NHAI official said that the project is expected to be completed by the end of December.

With regard to road over bridge works, several proposals were pending in various stages. Some required clearances or faced land acquisition issues.

The local body or the Tangedco also have some pending works in some projects. The Collector suggested that periodical review meetings should be held to study the progress of the projects.

Flyovers at Gandhipuram and Ukkadam, western bypass and a third road to Udhagamandalam are some of the major infrastructure projects pending here.

Nearly Rs. 300 crore was estimated as the amount required for acquisition of over 100 hectares for the 32-km western bypass road. The Highways Department will submit the land acquisition details to the Collector in a couple of days, an official said.

The project on third road to Udhagamandalam required the approval of the Forest Department. The immediate focus will be on land acquisition for the Ukkadam flyover and for the Gandhipuram flyover too, works are being expedited to start it, the official said.
