With the introduction of online registration of documents since Monday, there is a slowdown in registration and document writers in the district will go on an indefinite strike from Monday seeking rectification of the system.

The district is said to have about 5,000 document writers involved in preparing documents at the 17 sub-registrar offices in the district. Since the online system came into force, there is a slowdown in registration. Many of the document writers do not know how to use computers.

Further, the system is so slow that it takes nearly two hours to upload documents. The new system seems to reduce the role of the document writer. A customer can go to a browsing centre and prepare the document. The log in for document writers, which was available in the earlier version, has been removed, said one of the writers here.

At the sub-registrar office at the Collectorate here, just 10 documents were registered on Thursday. “I have 30 documents to be registered this week. I have not been able to do so,” the document writer claimed. The department should give more training to the writers. They should be permitted to prepare the documents and facilities should be created at each sub-registrar office to upload the details. Document writers in many other districts are already on strike. In Coimbatore, it will start on Monday, the writer added.

A senior official of the Registration Department contended that across the zone (Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode, Gobichettipalayam and the Nilgiris) 774 documents were registered on Thursday as against the average of 1,000 in the earlier system. On Friday, over 560 documents were registered. “The trial operation is on from last June and the document writers are trained for the new system. There is a permanent facility at the DIG (registration) office here to train those who need assistance. Sub-registrars worked till late evening on Thursday to ensure that documents are registered. There will be teething problems when a new system is introduced and those have been set right. Even in the online system, there is the option of document writer log in and citizen log in,” the official clarified.
