June 25, 2018 10:48 pm | Updated 10:48 pm IST - ERODE

Farmers who gathered at Thindal to voice their opposition against installing high tension electric cables through agricultural land were removed by the police here on Monday. They gathered at the spot even after the police denied permission for the protest.

They had earlier announced that a massive protest would be held against the project that affected agricultural activities in various districts in the State. The farmers said that despite severe opposition to the project, the Central government and the Tangedco were implementing it in Coimbatore, Tirupur, Erode, Karur, Dindigul, Namakkal, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and other districts. While underground cable was installed in Kerala, cables were being run over agricultural fields in other areas.

On Monday, police personnel were deployed before the the farmers arrived at the scene in Thindal. Though the farmers claimed that they did not gather to protest, the police removed them and took them away in a vehicle.
