A sit-in protest by two DMDK Councillors inside the Corporation council meeting hall alleging that Mayor A. Visalaskhi abruptly ended the meeting without giving them a chance to raise public issues, created some tense moments here on Wednesday evening.
The Councillors refused to move out of the hall and stated that they would stay overnight inside the building until an explanation was obtained from Mayor over her act.
Though did not resort to agitation, the CPI, CPI(M), and DMK councillors too concurred with the DMDK councillors and criticised the decision to end the meeting in a hurried manner.
“It is surprising that Mayor called me over to the dais to give written answers to the questions which I raised a month ago and then wound up the meeting abruptly even before I could open the envelope to go through the replies,” P. Govindaraj, Ward 52 Councillor (DMDK), told reporters.
The two councillors moved away only after Corporation Commissioner K.R. Selvaraj talked with them and promised to look into all their grievances. During the meeting, mixed reactions came from Councillors while evaluating the development works carried out by the administration under Mayor Visalakshi since got elected last year.
“In the last one year, it is commendable that the administration solved the water stagnation problems in Ward 12 by initiating development works to the tune of Rs. 1.33 crore. But at the same time, a lot need to be done in the solid waste management,” said S. Ravichandran (CPI).
Ward 32 Councillor A Subramaniam (DMK) too stressed the need to give an impetus to the garbage collection measures being implemented by the Corporation administration.

“There is a need to put more garbage collection bins at the ward level. Mosquito menace is another big problem that needed immediate attention,” he said.
