A panchayat councillor belonging to the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) has been arrested for allegedly attempting to outrage the modesty of two women in a dispute over a cricket match.
According to the police, A. Mohan (35), Councillor (2nd Ward), Thaliyur Panchayat, and several others were playing cricket at Thondamuthur near a poultry farm belonging to P. Shanmugasundaram (40).
A dispute broke out after a ball landed inside the farm. Following this, Mohan and three others allegedly barged into the farm and abused Shanmugasundaram and assaulted him. They also assaulted two women employees allegedly with the intent to outrage their modesty. They also ransacked the place and damaged electronic goods.
The Thondamuthur Police have registered a case and invoked Sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 506 (ii) (threat be to cause death), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 447 (criminal trespass), 294(b) (uttering obscene words in public place) and 427 (mischief causing damage) of the Indian Penal Code.
Mohan had been remanded in custody. A hunt was on for his three associates. Further investigations are on.
