A team of officials and workers from the State Highways department on Saturday has begun the demolition of a four storey building which was constructed on a land belonging to the department in Veerappan Chatram here.
The department found that the building was constructed by occupying its land when steps were taken up to widen the busy Sathy road 12 years ago. The department could not demolish the building earlier following a case filed in the Madras High Court.
After 12 years of legal wrangle, the department received a favourable judgement recently and had taken steps to demolish the building.
Over 50 workers from the department and earth movers were deployed to remove the encroachment. Officials said that it would take at least three days to demolish the entire building. A team of 30 police personnel was deployed to provide security and regulate the traffic. Divisional Engineer K. Pugalendhi and senior officials supervised the works.
