Black earthen mounds with big stones remain piled up on more than three junctions on the Bharathi Park Colony Second Main Road. Next to the mounds are pits the Coimbatore Corporation has dug for laying an underground drainage main sewerage line.

Residents of the area say the mounds of earth have remained there for over six months, obstructing traffic and being the major cause for accidents. The mounds obstruct view for road users for they are right at the junction, complains K.S. Balamurugan, a resident of Bharathi Park Fifth Cross.

Motorable space

Another reason for the accident is the mounds have reduced motorable space on the road and at the junctions. At the Bharathi Park Colony Second Main Road – Seventh Cross Junction, those driving from north to south are forced to move to the extreme right end of the road, obstructing the path for those moving in the opposite direction.

The same is true of those driving from west to east on the Second Main Road.

The earthen mounds have been the cause of accidents and avoidable arguments between road users, says resident Deeva A. Pathak. The only saving grace is the presence of street lights at the junctions.

Ward Councillor V. Annammal says that the JNNURM Wing of the Corporation has been executing the work for long.

The delay has irked the residents and she has taken it up with Mayor P. Rajkumar for early completion.

Official sources say the Corporation took up the work around eight months ago to lay a main sewerage line from the residential area to the Mettupalayam Road.

But it had to halt work as the contractor executing the work did not have the pipes to be used at joints. By then the water supply line was also damaged. Now the water supply line has been repaired and the pipes have also arrived.

The Corporation will take up the work in the next few days to complete the work.

Mr. Balamurugan says the residents expect the civic body to finish the task before the start of the southwest Monsoon.
