Sewage stagnating in public places, battered road stretches and overflowing of septic tanks attached to public toilets are some of the issues that still confront residents of Corporation Ward 22 despite their taking matters to the notice of the district administration on many occasions.
No councillor Making matters difficult for the dwellers, the ward is without a councillor since the death of the incumbent councillor C. Muthusamy more than a year ago. Otherwise, the people could have taken up the problems at the regular corporation council meetings.
“Due to the absence of the elected representative, the people themselves have to go all the way to the Corporation office, sacrificing their daily wages to take up even trivial civic issues encountered every day,” P. Manoharan, a rice dealer residing in the ward, pointed out to The Hindu.
The interesting aspect has been that the ward is located in the heart of Tirupur city and the poor infrastructure is creating problems for residents of the other wards too, who travel through the locality to reach other parts of the city.
The road that connects Pappanaickenpalayam in the ward with Goundanaickenpalayam is presently in extremely poor shape after sewage and water from the broken drains flowed onto the road surface.
“The tarred portion came off long ago, but the authorities are yet to repair it. During rain, vehicles used to get stuck in the slushy portion,” Surendran, a newspaper agent and a social activist who travels through the stretch, pointed out.
Mr. Manoharan added that this had been the case in many other parts of the ward too.
Septic tank Due to damage in the septic tank of a public toilet at Pappanaickenpalayam, sewage and human waste is coming out into the open. This problem too has not been attended to in a suitable manner by the authorities.
“All they have done is to carry out cosmetic works to the said toilet complex by sticking tiles to the walls but they have not addressed the core problem,” residents pointed out.
