Members of the Communist Party of India staged protests across the district on Tuesday highlighting a set of demands that included farm loan waiver and exemption for Tamil Nadu students from NEET.
The police removed over 800 protesters from 12 places in the district. The removed included the party’s district secretary V.S. Sundaram, who organised a protest in Peelamedu, and former MLA M. Arumugham, who led a protest in Anamalai.
Loan waiver
The party said it demands included farm loan waiver - all types of loans, just price for farmers’ produce, long-term interest-free loan for farmers, exemption from tax for farm inputs, exemption for Tamil Nadu students from the NEET and not allow multinational companies to loot resources like by mining sand, granite, rare earths, oil and natural gas from the State.
The CPI wanted the Central Government to pass the Lok Pal bill in the Lok Sabha and the State Government to pass the Lok Ayuktha bill in the Assembly to stop corruption.
Tirupur
In Tirupur, 1,509 members of the CPI were arrested when they blocked roads at 14 places in the district on Tuesday.
They wanted speedy redress of various civic matters.
The agitation was to bring to focus the the difficulties being faced by small-scale traders after the implementation of GST.
“Various types of taxes on course of textile production ranging from 5 % to 18 % under the GST system, is causing difficulties to the small-scale industrialists,” said CPI district secretary M. Subramanian.
Udhagamandalam
More than 25 CPI activists were arrested in the Nilgiris on Tuesday for blocking road in front of the bus stand in protest against GST, and NEET.
