Cadre of the Communist Party of India (CPI) staged a demonstration in the city on Tuesday in protest against the Karnataka Government’s stand in the Cauvery issue.

Around 125 cadre participated in the protest that was held in Gandhipuram. Led by the party’s district secretary K. Arumugham, the cadre wanted the Congress and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam to ensure that the Central Government protected the interests of Tamil Nadu.

They urged the Karnataka Government to release water as per the Supreme Court’s and Cauvery River Authority’s directions, keeping in mind the interests of farmers in Tamil Nadu.

The other issue the members highlighted was the power situation in the State. Given the 14-hour-plus power disruption in Tamil Nadu, residents and small and big industries were affected alike. Workers of industries were the worst affected.

The Tamil Nadu Government must initiate measures to streamline power supply, obtain more power from the central pool and start defunct power generation units.

K.M. Selvaraj, C. Sivasami, K.G. Jaganathan and other district office-bearers participated.
