Councillors of opposition parties staged a walkout at the Erode Corporation council meeting held on Thursday protesting against the civic body's move to increase the water charges.
Members belonging to All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, MDMK and DMDK raised the issue immediately after the beginning of the meeting and urged the civic administration to drop the move, as it would affect all the people in the town.
They also walked out of the council hall and staged a demonstration in front of the Corporation office.
The agitating councillors said that people in the town were already burdened with huge amount of other taxes.
“The civic body had grossly failed to ensure adequate supply of water in all the parts in the town. But it is now trying to increase the water charges, which is not fair,” they said.
Meanwhile, Congress councillors urged the civic body to monitor the building plan approval process and ensure greater transparency.
Members of the ruling party discussed various issues in the meeting. Mayor Kumar Murugesh presided.
