The Coimbatore Corporation has proposed either an elevated express way or mono rail along the Avinashi Road.
Sharing the details, Mayor S.M. Velusamy told reporters on Tuesday that the civic body had mooted the idea at a joint meeting the civic body officials had with their counterparts from the Transport and Highways Departments and the City Traffic Police.
Also present were representatives from non-government organisations.
The purpose behind the Corporation calling for meeting was to review schemes the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, had announced for the city and identify new projects.
Skywalks
Mr. Velusamy said that aside from the skywalks the Corporation had been talking about, at the meeting it was decided to have two subways – one near the Coimbatore Railway Junction and other near the NSR Road – Mettupalayam Road Junction.
Schemes
The Corporation had also decided to take up for development the identified schemes in a phased manner.
It had the Perur Road – Thadagam Road, Singanallur Road – Vellalore Road, Mettupalayam Road – Sathyamangalam Road, Avinashi Road – Masakalipalayam Road links in mind.
As for the Highways Department’s project he said that the officials had told him that a new design for the Gandhipuram Flyover had been prepared, the detailed project report was also ready and that they were ready to send the estimates to the senior officials for approval.
Mr. Velusamy said that the Department had made progress in the Textool road over bridge in Ganapathy in that the officials had completed soil tests and were in the process of preparing the design.
He said that the had asked the officials to factor in the fact that the Corporation had proposed an integrated bus stand in Gandhipuram and that impact it would have on the traffic in the area.
Ukkadam flyover
He said that the Highways Department officials would complete the estimate preparation task in the Ukkadam Flyover project.
The City Traffic Police had asked the Corporation to replace broken or missing slabs on closed drains as they also doubled up as pedestrian pathways.
The Corporation had agreed to the demand, he added.
