Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)- Coimbatore has launched a project to strengthen the connection between educational institutions and industries in the region.

Though colleges have several tie-ups with industries, the initiative looks at several areas in which the industries and the institutes can benefit from a partnership.

Since it is a pilot project, two autonomous engineering colleges and 22 industries are taking part initially and about 250 students will do a two or three-month internship at the industries in the sixth semester.

This will give them credit points in their sixth semester.

According to C.R. Swaminathan, co-chair of CII’s national higher education committee, internship for students will be just a part of the project. Industries have given their requirements and the institutes will try to meet it. The CII will only facilitate interaction between the industries and the colleges. Trainings for students and programmes for the faculty are also part of the programme. Students for the project will be from mechanical, mechatronics, electrical and electronics and instrumentation courses. The programme was launched last week and the internship will start next month. After the pilot project, the initiative would be rolled out in other institutions in the southern States that are interested in taking part in it.
