August 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 29, 2016 04:28 pm IST - COIMBATORE:

Members of Tamil Puligal staged a demonstration near the South Taluk Office here on Thursday seeking speedy completion of the memorial for Ondiveeran at Tirunelveli district.

The demonstration was organised to mark the death anniversary of the freedom fighter.

Ninety persons including many women took part in the protest.

The organisation’s headquarters secretary M. Ilavenil, who led the demonstration, said that the Dravida Munetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led Government announced the memorial for Vanjinathan, Gopalsamy Naidu and Ondiveeran in March 2010.

“The first two were completed and inaugurated,” he said.

He added that the present Government also announced memorials for Velu Nachiyar and Sankaralingam, completed its construction and inaugurated them.

“The memorial for Ondiveeran has not been taken seriously,” he said.

The demonstrators urged the State Government to establish the memorial with a bronze statue of the freedom fighter.
