Students of Sri Eshwar College of Engineering will get to work on real-time projects just as software professionals do, thanks to agreements it signed with a few companies. College Director R. Rajaram said that the institution had inked agreements with Bahwan Cybertek and Cloud Kinetics Cloud Services Centre to establish development centres and also with a few other companies for laboratories.
The two companies will train faculty and students on how software companies work and also share projects or portions thereof to enable students work on real-time projects. The projects the companies share are of their customers. The students, mostly drawn from circuit branches, work in software company-like environment with restricted access to maintain secrecy.
The students who work on the two companies’ projects will also get to use the same to fulfil their final year project obligations, says Kannan Narasimhan, a College Director. Complementing him, the College Principal Sudha Mohanram says that this way the college ensures that the students do not ‘buy’ ready-made projects and get to have real-time experience in executing projects.
As for the agreements signed for establishment of laboratories, Mr. Narasimhan says that companies will not share customer projects but other work that they do. Unlike the development centre, here the companies’ employees will not be present to monitor work.
Ms. Mohanram says that the three-year understanding reached with the colleges puts the students at an advantageous position in that they get a sneak peak of how software firms work. And, the understanding informally translates to preference in recruitment.
Nasscom Senior Director K. Purushothaman says that such understanding help companies save on the cost of training manpower as the graduates are deployment-ready.
The companies spend around Rs. 3,000 crore a year on training fresh recruits.
