Coimbatore Corporation’s SRP Ammani Ammal Girls’ Hr. Sec. School, R.S. Puram, Corporation Primary School, Kallimadai, Chinmaya International Residential School and Sri Jayendra Saraswathy Vidyalaya Mat. Hr. Sec. School won prizes for environment conservation.

Kovai Green League, an environment organisation, had instituted the prizes and at a function held here on Wednesday, Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner K. Vijayakarthikeyan and Conservator of Forest S. Ramasubramaniam gave away the prizes.

A release from the League said it had also recognised Adwaith GNS Mat. Hr. Sec. School for ‘creative green campus’, Delhi Public School, Coimbatore, for ‘outstanding green campus’, BVM Global @ Coimbatore for ‘upcoming green campus’, GKD Mat. Hr. Sec. School for ‘campus with maximum native trees and The Camford International School for ‘best waste management’. The League through a jury had judged the schools on various criteria like number of trees, native species among those, green initiatives, involvement of students in environment conservation, outreach programmes to the community and waste management.

Kovai Green League is an initiative by Brookefields, Bosch, WWF-India, Rotary Club of Coimbatore and Suryan FM to create awareness on green cover and environment conservation. It had sent a questionnaire to schools asking details on tree cover, sources of water and utilisation, gardening activities, alternative energy sources used at school, birds spotted in the campus, and details of environment awareness sessions held at school.
