A survey to enumerate street lights in the added areas of the Coimbatore Corporation to bring in energy efficiency through Light Emitting Diode (LED) and Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) began here on Thursday.

Initiative

Mayor S.M. Velusamy, Corporation Commissioner G. Latha, Deputy Commissioner S. Sivarasu and other officials and councillors took part in the launch at Kavundampalayam, one of the areas recently added to the Coimbatore Corporation limit.

The work is an initiative of the Corporation at Rs. 22 crore with private participation.

Maintenance

At present, the 40 wards that had been added to the Corporation have 22,473 street lights and Rs. 5 crore is being spent annually towards their maintenance besides Rs. 9 crore towards the electricity consumption charges.

LED

To bring down the maintenance and power consumption expenditure, the survey is being undertaken to replace the 40 watt tube lights with CFL and LED.

This will ensure better illumination of these areas besides being cost effective, according to the Corporation officials.
