Kongu Nadu Munnetra Kazhagam has urged the Coimbatore Corporation to clean the Sanganur Canal.
In a release, G.K. Nagaraj, chief organiser, said the canal, which carried rainwater from Kurudimalai, Thadagam, Kanuvai, Kavundampalayam and Thudiyalur and drained into the Chinna Vedampatti and Singanallur Tanks and also River Noyyal, had obstructions from Sivananda Colony to Singanallur.
Thorny shrubs, trees and dumped waste obstructed the flow.
The party pointed out two places where the problem was acute – near the Textool Bridge, where garbage, trees and shrubs had obstructed the flow of water and posed health hazard and near Ramakrishna Kalyana Mandapam, where one portion was covered by the road and other by thorny shrubs.
It said the canal also suffered from encroachments at many places, reduced width and water carrying capacity.
Corporation should clean the canal that served as a source for the Singanallur Tank and that too prior to the monsoon.
