Several parts of the city have started facing frequent power disruptions creating fear of longer hours of power cuts.
There is no load shedding or power cut in the city. The disruptions could be because of feeder break down or shut downs to attend to fuse off calls, says an official of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation.
Further, works are on across the city to cut branches so that power lines are not disturbed during rain. “Works that are usually taken up as pre-monsoon precautions are also going on now,” the official said.
But, residents in several parts of the city say that there are power disruptions of 15 minutes to 30 minutes almost every day and there is no indication that there will be a power cut.
Some industries say that there are no power cuts in areas that are hubs for micro and small-scale industries in the city.
However, some others say that power cuts have become frequent in the last two weeks.
“If we enquire about power cuts with the local official or wireman, they tell us that it is for maintenance work or to attend to complaints. But, power disruptions have become frequent,” says J. James, president of Tamil Nadu Association for Cottage and Tiny Enterprises.
This has not affected production so far because the units but workers remain idle when there is no power supply, he says.
“On a day, we get 40 to 50 fuse off calls in the city and if there is rain, there are complaints of break downs. Power supply should be cut off for a particular area to attend to these complaints,” the official says.
