Coimbatore city police on Sunday cracked the whip on super bikes speeding on the roads. The police registered cases and collected fines from a few violators. The police also got statements from a few others in writing that they will rectify violations and produce their vehicles before the police in a couple of days.

Action was taken following a direction from City Police Commissioner A. Amalraj, based on complaints that speeding bikes posed a threat to other motorists. “We had received complaints of over-speeding, rash and negligent driving and hence, had asked personnel to check all speeding vehicles,” he said.

A police officer said that even the police had witnessed and received complaints that some bikers are speeding on Race Course Road, Avinashi Road and Trichy Road. On Sunday morning, a group of bikers were riding on Avinashi Road from Anna Statue towards Lakshmi Mills Junction and it was their regular, long drives on Sundays. Meanwhile, the Race Course Police stopped another group of bikers opposite the PRS Ground on Avinashi Road.

“The speed limit on Avinashi Road and many city roads is 45 km an hour. But the bikes that were caught were violating the speed limit,” Inspector V. Selvaraj said. The police booked two bikes for over-speeding and imposed a fine of Rs. 300 on each of them. A fine of Rs. 1,200 was imposed on a biker for rash and negligent riding.

Further, three of them were booked for not having registration number plates on their bikes and a fine was imposed on them. Eight other super bike riders, who did not have the number plates according to the norms were asked to change the display pattern and make the plates visible. Bike riders said that they were a group of friends who used to regularly go on long rides.
