The Coimbatore Corporation's decision to exclude Vellalore and Perur Town Panchayats and Chinniyamapalayam Panchayat from its expansion plans has come as a huge blow.
The civic body in a note said that it proposed to include Kurichi, Kuniamuthur and Kavundampalayam Municipalities, Thudiyalur, Vellakinaru, Chinna Vedampatti, Saravanampatti, Kalapatti, Vadavalli and Veerakeralam Town Panchayats and Vilankurichi Village Panchayat. The aforementioned localities, after reorganisation, would contribute 40 wards to the Corporation.
But this is not what was originally envisaged.
A State Government's Order, issued by the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department on September 28, 2010, said that the Government proposed to include Kurichi, Kuniamuthur and Kavundampalayam Municipalities, Saravanampatti, Kalapatti, Vellalore, Vadavalli, Thudiyalur, Veerakeralam and Perur Town Panchayats and Chinniyampalayam and Vilankurichi Panchayats.
The September 2010 Order also said the Commissioner had said that since Chinna Vedampatti and Vellakinaru had not urbanised to the desired extent it was not necessary to include the two local bodies in the Corporation.
Subsequently, in February this year, through Government Order 40, the Government proposed the inclusion of Chinna Vedampatti and Vellakinaru. And through a series of orders thereafter excluded the three local bodies.
Vellalore Town Panchayat Chairman E.V. Balasubramaniam said the residents hoped that if the area were to be included in the Corporation it would solve their water problem. Perur Town Panchayat Chairman N. Gopal said the local body had been suffering with only three conservancy workers for a population of 20,000. Chinniyampalayam Panchayat president too echoed similar sentiments.
