The choked drain on Nava India lane in the city.

The slushy, undulating Nava India lane, off the Nava India Junction, is home to more than a dozen small and medium industries, commercial establishments. On both sides of the lane are drains the Coimbatore Corporation constructed more than two years ago.

Industrialists say it is not the road that troubles them but the choked drain. Sewage is full to the brim as the solid waste inside the drain has pushed the water up.

The Corporation conservancy workers have never cleaned the drain on one side of the road since its construction. On the other side they clean the drain on a regular basis thanks to a few industrial establishments that 'take care' of them.

The result is that the stagnant sewage has aided mosquito breeding in a big way, they complain.

R. Vijayakumar, a guard at a factory, says that he suffers the most as his work is right at the entrance and close to the drain. The problem of mosquitoes is right throughout the day but peaks during evenings. He now fears he will contract fever, he adds.

Workers of a few industries got together and wrote the Corporation in June last year but till date there has been no relief.

They ask how proper is it on the part of the Corporation that fines residents for not destroying mosquito breeding sources to neglect the drain, even after they have complained. They say they want the Corporation to act immediately before people turn sick with fever or dengue.

Officials in the Corporation's health wing say they will clean the drain at the earliest.
