Inspector General of Police (West Zone) T.P. Sundaramoorthy has warned that chain snatchers would be detained under Goondas Act from now on.
“Stringent action is very much needed to deter the possible snatchers and thereby bring down the snatching incidents. We are giving topmost priority to prevent crime cases from occurring in Tirupur district,” he said while talking to reporters here after flagging off 25 anti-chain snatching motorcycle patrols in the district on Friday.
Mr. Sundaramoorthy also handed over recovered jewellery worth Rs. 43 lakh, which were stolen in different snatching and burglary cases, to its owners.
The IG gave away certificates and prizes to the police officials who were part of the crime teams that solved the said crime cases and recovered the stolen properties.
Of the 25 anti-chain snatching mobile patrols introduced, seven would patrol College Road, P.N.Road, Chamundipuram, Kongu Main road and Avinashi road under Tirupur North police sub-division limits.
Among the remaining, five would be utilised in Tirupur South sub-division, four in Avinashi sub-division, three in Palladam sub-division, and two each in Udumalpet, Dharapuram and Kangayam sub-divisions.
Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar Singh said that introduction of two-wheeler mobile patrols would instil fear among the possible offenders. “With the vehicles, night patrol will get strengthened further across the district,” he added.
Deputy Superintendent of Police R. Rajaram and other senior officials were present.
