September 30, 2014 11:26 am | Updated 11:26 am IST - Coimbatore:

The police have registered two cases against more than 30 AIADMK activists on charges of forcing people to close shops.

In the case registered in Valparai Police Station, the police said that activists led by Hameed asked shopkeepers to close shops but they refused.

This led to a wordy quarrel between the traders, and party activists.

They assaulted the traders, the police said. In Perianaickenpalayam, an AIADMK functionary, N. Chinnamani, in an inebriated condition asked traders to down shutters on Saturday. The police were yet to arrest the accused.

House burgled

Unidentified persons gained entry into a house in Fathima Nagar and decamped with jewellery weighing three sovereigns.

The police said that the incident occurred when M. Anwar and his family members were away to meet a relative.

Protest

Students of the Government Law College, Coimbatore, staged a demonstration in front of the college on Monday in protest against the transfer of three students.

The students closed the gate in the morning to deny entry to the principal, and faculty.

Hearing adjourned

The hearing of the Pollachi minor rape case has been adjourned to October 8, as two prosecution witnesses could not reach Coimbatore from Chennai.
