City Police have registered a case of cheating against Anitha Esther (34), her father Anthony Muthu and brother Antony.
According to police, Ganapathy Murugan working in an educational institution in Chidambaram had preferred a complaint stating that he was in love with his classmate Anitha Esther, when they studied under-graduation together in Tuticorin.
He said that the affair lasted for 13 years.
When he insisted on getting married, she reportedly sought a loan for clearing the debt of nearly Rs. 60 lakh incurred by her father.
Handed over
The complainant claimed that through various sources, he raised funds and reportedly handed over Rs. 39.27 lakh and the marriage was fixed for August 2011. However, Ms. Esther backed out of the marriage and her father refused to repay the money, Murugan said.
Police have registered a case against the three for conspiracy, cheating and criminal intimidation. Investigations are on.
Gamblers held
Koilpalayam Police on Thursday raided a premise behind a defunct cinema theatre in the area and arrested 18 gamblers and recovered Rs. 14,250 from them.
One of the arrested Balakrishnan, a retired Special Sub-Inspector, was found selling ganja to the gamblers. Police claimed to have recovered 300 grams of ganja from him. Further investigations are on.
