Car-Free Sundays on NSR Road is back

Car-Free Sundays, an initiative by The Hindu Tamil in partnership with Coimbatore Corporation and Coimbatore City Traffic Police, will resume on NSR Road at Sai Baba Colony from May 22. The event had completed nine weeks on April 24.

The activity for the tenth week resumes with a bang after a suspension for three weeks owing to the Assembly elections. A number of events both on-stage and off-stage were getting lined up on May 22 from 6.30 a.m. to 9 a.m.

The objective behind the initiative is to restore the roads for people to enjoy by stopping motorised forms of transports for a few hours.

The events include a session on staying fit by Beethoven Fitness, illusions by Tarun and team, performance by Ranjith School of Dance, Karate demo and instructions, a cultural dance followed by a instrumental music performance.

These are just a few events to name and there are many more by local talents. In addition, along the entire 800-meter stretch there would be portrait sketching, tattooing, children displaying their drawing skills on the road, cycling besides a host of sports by local residents and children. Radio City is the Radio Partner and Mark 1 Events is the event manager.

Traffic diversion

To enable activities on the Car Free Sunday stretch, there will a traffic diversion. Vehicles from Mettupalayam Road entering NSR Road will be allowed to proceed after S Bend stretch and will have take a left and get diverted through Bharathi Park IInd Cross and enter Azhagesan Road to proceed towards Thadagam Road. These vehicles will enter Thadagam Road stretch near Bharathi School.

In the return directions, vehicles will not be allowed from Thadagam Road to enter NSR Road and will have to proceed further on Thadagam Road and take a left at Bharathi School to join Azhagesan Road and proceed further. They can go straight and join Mettupalayam Road or could take the left at Bharathi Park IInd Cross and rejoin NSR Road to proceed further.
