The need for a campaign to combat the growing alcoholism-related problems among the people of The Nilgiris, was stressed at the annual general meeting of the Porangadu Seemai Nala Sangam, a Kotagiri-based Badaga welfare association.
Committee
Expressing concern over alcoholism destroying individuals and families, the meeting resolved to form a 10-member committee to enhance awareness among the people about the consequences of alcoholism.
The committee will create awareness on the habit of savings and hard work.
The meeting resolved to revive the system of resolving problems through panchayats in order to ensure peace and unity in the villages.
It was decided to bring about suitable changes in the functioning of such panchayats and ensure that Badaga culture is protected at all costs.
The meeting resolved to evolve ways to prevent sale of farm lands and observe austerity in conducting marriages.
In order to improve the economy of the district in general and the rural areas in particular, the participants resolved to urge the government to extend subsidy for setting up cottage industries in the villages.
Tea factories
The sangam decided to establish mini tea factories with the help of the Tea Board. Association president B.H. Ramakrishnan presided. General secretary A. Kari Gowder, welcomed the gathering. Joint general secretary M. Karidhasan proposed a vote of thanks.
