Though Tamil Nadu is a cradle of Dravidian civilisation, it is sad that many of the historical events that act as the backbone of the State are not yet recorded, C. Swaminathan, Vice-Chancellor, Bharathiar University, said here recently.
Inaugurating the three-day 17th annual session of the Tamil Nadu History Congress at N.G.M. College, he made an earnest appeal that the rich history and the glorious past of Tamil Nadu be preserved.
“There is a decline in the number of students getting admitted in the Department of History in all the colleges. If travel and tourism or media and administration are made part of the history curriculum, students of history will have better placement prospects,” Mr. Swaminathan said.
Historian N. Rajayyan was recognised for his contribution to history.
R. Muthukumaran, Head, Department of History, NGM College, received the ‘Prema-Kasthuri' endowment prize for his paper presentation.
B.K. Krishnaraj Vanavarayar, president of the college, P. Jagadeesan, Member, State Planning Commission, and R.M. Pankajavalli, Regional Joint Director of Collegiate Education, Coimbatore, offered felicitations. More than 300 professors and many research scholars presented papers on social, economic, cultural, and political history of Tamil Nadu.
