About 65 civil engineering students from colleges and polytechnics in Coimbatore, Erode and Tirupur have been selected by construction companies in the region for employment at the firms. Coimbatore Builders’ and Contractors’ Association organised a placement programme here on Saturday for the third year students.

The organisers told The Hindu that the association conducted an online test for the final year civil engineering students in 23 polytechnics and 49 engineering colleges in the region last month and nearly 1,500 students participated. Of these, 350 were short-listed and called for an interview here on Saturday.

Representatives from as many as 21 construction companies, including half a dozen from other parts of the region, participated to recruit 65 candidates. The candidates will join at the junior engineer level. The selected candidates will be employed as site engineers, designers, etc. They will be trained at the companies after they complete their college education.

Though the requirement is only 65 candidates, the companies have short-listed about 90. They will finalise the candidates for their actual requirement and communicate to the students. Last year, 32 companies participated in the programme and nearly 160 students were recruited. At least 70 per cent of them continue to work at the construction firms. The demand is lower this year, they said.
