Forest department officials on Wednesday captured 20 bonnet macaques that were creating menace at Pethikuttai area of Sirumugai forest range. Officials said that the captured macaques will be released at Kunukku Madavu, a reserve forest area.

According to forest department officials, the macaques in large numbers were posing threat to farmers as well as a few shop owners in Pethikuttai.

“We had already captured 10 monkeys from the same area and released in reserve forest. A cage was brought from Mettupalayam and trapped them by spreading puffed rice inside,” said E.N. Manoharan, Forest Range officer, Sirumugai.

Mr. Manoharan said that presence of a river and natural feeds in the forest made them translocate macaques to Kunukku Madavu.
