Members of the Coimbatore District Autorickshaw Workers All Association Joint Committee staged a protest at Gandhipuram on Thursday demanding the release of the auto drivers who had been imprisoned recently after being accused of attacking other auto drivers.
They also sought the immediate implementation of the meter fare system. While such a system had been fixed for Chennai, the committee said that it should be extended to the rest of the State also at the earliest. Committee president P.K. Sukumaran told reporters that the minimum fare must be fixed at Rs. 30 and Rs. 15 for every subsequent kilometre.
The committee termed the fare levels fixed for Chennai “as inadequate” and failing to reflect the repeated hike in fuel prices in recent years. It urged the State Government to follow the Supreme Court’s directive to fix new auto fares across the State after consultations
StrikeHe also warned of an indefinite strike by autos if the State Government failed to implement the fare system expeditiously.
