Anti-hijack drill held at Coimbatore airport

An anti-hijack drill was conducted at the Coimbatore Airport on Wednesday.

According to the officials, the drill was held to implement the contingency plans involving Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Airports Authority of India personnel, Airport Department of Fire Safety and Air Traffic Controllers.

Once a hijacked plane lands, the Aerodrome Committee chaired by the City Police Commissioner will be convened by the Airport Controller.

In case of the hijacked airliner being an international one, personnel of the Customs and Immigration would also be involved. The station managers of private airliners would also be roped in.

The objective was to contain the situation till a National Security Guard team could arrive to handle the situation. Such drills were conducted once a year, the officials added.

D. Paul Manickam, Airport Director, Coimbatore International Airport, Pravesh Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (law and order), Coimbatore City, oversaw the exercise.
