Anna University-Coimbatore will organise a marathon on Saturday (June 19) on the eve of the World Classical Tamil Conference.
Addressing journalists at a press meet at the Government College of Technology (GCT) here on Thursday, Vice-Chancellor K. Karunakaran said the university would conduct the event to draw people towards the conference and also highlight the richness of Tamil.
The event would start at 6.30 a.m. at the GCT campus and runners would go through the Bharathi Park Road, Mettupalayam Road, reach Murugan Mill, from there take Alagesan Road to touch Thadagam Road and return to the GCT campus. It would be a five-km run.
There would be four categories of participants - those below class eight, those above class eight, college students and members of public. And again boys and girls would form separate categories.
Mr. Karunakaran said the University had allotted Rs. 1 lakh for the smooth conduct of the marathon.
It would be coordinated and supervised by Registrar (in-charge) S. Premchand, GCT Principal R. Sundararajan, GCT Physical Education Director M. Adhimoolam, among others.
Aside from honouring prize winners and giving participation certificates, the university would also give a prize to the institution bringing in the maximum number of participants, he said.
The Vice-Chancellor said he expected around 2,500 runners to participate.
The university would also participate in the Ninth World Tamil Internet Conference by putting up a stall on e-governance and related topics.
In response to a question on ragging, he said Governor and Chancellor Surjit Singh Barnala had written to Vice-Chancellors asking for details on the steps taken to curb ragging.
Anna University-Coimbatore would respond by June 25, the last date and also see to it that no ragging took place at any of its constituent colleges.
