An innovative, low-cost technology for treating human waste – developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) – can aid in putting an end to the current situation of manual scavenging in the country.
Green campaign
General Manger of MAK Controls and Systems, Thillai Senthil Prabhu told the presspersons here on Friday that as part of a green campaign for the ‘Swachh Bharath Mission’, the company is offering to implement these toilets across Tamil Nadu and other states.
Ideal solution
“The technology, which uses bacteria to treat waste, was originally developed by the Defence Research Development Establishment (DRDE), Gwalior, to meet the sanitation requirements of soldiers serving in the high altitudes of Ladakh. It can turn out to be an ideal solution for next generation sanitation in our country.” he said.
Chennai floods
The company being the Transfer of Technology (TOT) holder have already installed nearly 300 bio digester toilets across Tamil Nadu. Free installations were also done for the needy people when an NGO approached them after Chennai flood.
According to him, awareness must be created among public and the builders as the project did not make much progress due to lack of popularity.
With the bacterial inoculums manufacturing plants installed in Coimbatore, the company is confident on installing more bio-toilets in and around the city.
Major block
He also told that the government fund allocation of Rs.12, 000 per house for building toilets is a major block for the project as the cost of one biodigester unit will take at least Rs. 20,000.
