Amazon plans same-day delivery of products

Amazon.in is looking at increasing same-day delivery of products.

Fulfilment centres

Noor Patel, Director-Category Management of Amazon.in, told presspersons here on Wednesday that it has 12 fulfilment centres in the country, including one in Chennai, and there will be more coming up in Tamil Nadu.

The storage capacity of these centres in the country is 2.6 million sq.ft. It also has its own logistics facility and 80 per cent of the units are delivered by Amazon through its own logistics facility. Of the remaining 20 per cent, majority is handled by India Post.

There are over 30,000 sellers on Amazon.in and majority of them are small enterprises.

Non-metro cities

There is a growing market from non-metro cities and it is almost 50 per cent of the sales now. Almost 60 per cent of customers now access Amazon on their mobile.

Amazon is looking at same day delivery even in markets without fulfilment centres.

It has some pilot projects on for this purpose. For instance, in Bengaluru it started a pilot project nearly seven weeks ago (Kirana now).

There are five stores that will deliver in a few hours the essentials (mainly household and grocery products) to the customers.

Amazon Pickup has been launched in 11,000 pickup points in 50 cities. Customers who will not be at home while the product is delivered can choose a pickup point – a travel agent, mom and pop store or a florist in the neighbourhood - and product will be delivered at the point.

“In terms of efficiency and reach, we will have a regional approach and it will give cost benefits,” he said.
