Members of the construction wing of the All India Trade Union Congress on Tuesday staged a demonstration in front of a liquor outlet at Gandhipuram and attempted to shut down the outlet, as part of a State-wide protest demanding prohibition. The Kattoor Police removed the 200 persons who staged the protest.

The liquor vending policy the State Government pursued had ruined several families and among the worst affected were the families of construction workers.

The women found it difficult to run families as most men spent close to 90 per cent of their earnings on liquor.

Medical expenses

And the rest 10 per cent went to meet the addicted men’s medical expenses, said P. Kala, district secretary, construction workers’ wing.

The CPI district secretary K.M. Selvaraj and the State deputy secretary, construction workers’ wing, N. Selvaraj, were among those who led the protests.
