Advantage in Coimbatore: H. Raja

BJP might announce its candidate on Wednesday for the election of Coimbatore Mayor.

September 03, 2014 08:05 am | Updated 08:05 am IST - COIMBATORE:

The BJP will take on the AIADMK in the local bodies by-polls and in the 2016 Assembly elections, as it did in the Lok Sabha elections, BJP national general secretary H. Raja said on Tuesday.

The party might announce its candidate on Wednesday for the election of Coimbatore Mayor. A meeting to elicit the views of party functionaries and members on the choice of the candidate was held on Tuesday, he told journalists here.

Mr. Raja said the 2016 polls would boil down to a contest between the AIADMK and the BJP-led alliance, and the September 18 by-elections were only a prelude to it.

He pointed out that in the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP secured 14,000 votes more in the constituencies in Coimbatore city, so it would have an advantage in the Mayoral by-election.

He urged the State government to act against the police for allegedly attacking participants of Vinayaka Chathurthi celebrations in Madurai, Tiruchi and Tirunelveli districts.
