With the city waiting for a series of infrastructure projects to take off and ease the traffic problems, works of at least two are expected to commence at the earliest.
Flyovers at Gandhipuram, Eachanari, Ukkadam and near Textool are projects on National Highways roads taken up by the State Government. While work has commenced at Eachanari, the Western Bypass and Ukkadam flyover proposals are in the Detailed Project Report (DPR) stage.
An official of the State Highways Department told The Hindu here on Saturday that administrative sanction was provided for the flyovers near Textool and at Gandhipuram.
The State Government had sanctioned Rs. 20 crore for the two-lane bridge near Textool and Rs. 148 crore for the Gandhipuram flyover. The Textool bridge work does not require any land acquisition and soil testing was over. The ground details were sent to the design wing. After finalising the design, bids would be invited. A two-lane flyover was already constructed and this project would provide a four-lane flyover in that area.
With regard to the Gandhipuram proposal, the revised design was for a two-tier flyover without an underpass. This had minimised the land acquisition requirement and the length of the flyover had increased by about 500 metres. The revised design should get the required approvals. After that a detailed project report would be prepared and the land acquisition would commence. After that, bids would be called for execution of the project.
The Ukkadam proposal would have to get administrative sanction after the details were finalised. Under the revised alignment, the two-tier flyover would be from Aathupalam to Ukkadam Bus Stand.
