K. Prithika Yasini has created a record of sorts by joining the Tamil Nadu Police Force as trainee sub-inspector, the first transgender to achieve this distinction in the country.
She has been posted to Dharmapuri after the completion of one year intensive training at Chennai and reported for duty on Sunday.
Prithika Yasini has achieved this distinction with sheer grit and determination and after successfully fighting a legal battle at the Madras High Court.
Hailing from a marginalised family from Salem, Ms. Yasini was selected for the post of sub-inspector, thanks to a ruling of the Madras High Court in her favour in 2015.
A Madras High Court Bench had ordered the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board, which is in-charge of selecting the personnel for the state police force, to include members from the transgender community under ‘third category’.
She was among the 1,028 new SI recruits who were inducted into the Tamil Nadu Police Force after completion of training for a year a few days ago.
The police sources said that Prithika Yasini will serve as trainee sub-inspector of police for a period of six months in Dharmapuri district. After the successful completion of this training period, she will be posted as full-fledged sub-inspector of police.
