Three doctors of a private hospital in Coimbatore and two of their family members were killed in a collision involving a car and a tanker lorry near Bhavani in Erode district on Thursday.

Police said S. Sundaramoorthi of the KTVR Group Hospital and five of his family members visited Kolathur in Salem district to witness a temple festival. They were returning home on Thursday afternoon when the tanker lorry proceeding to Mettur dashed against their car.

Dr. Sundaramoorthi, his wife Dr. Susheela, relative Dr. Anuradha, mother Ponniammal and mother-in-law Siddhammal died on the spot. Dr. Anuradha's granddaughter Ovia (4), sustained serious injuries and has been admitted to hospital.

Police said Dr. Sundaramoorthi was at the wheel when the accident took place. Bhavani police registered a case and arrested the driver of the tanker lorry.

Further investigation is on.
