As many as 192 cadre of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, who were arrested by the police for showing black flags to Governor Banwarilal Purohit in the town on Friday, were remanded in judicial custody for 15 days by the Judicial Magistrate Court II on late Friday evening.
The police had picked up a total of 234 DMK cadre led by S. Gandhi Selvan, former Union Minister and in-charge of the Namakkal east district unit of the party, and K. S. Moorthy, MLA and secretary of the Namakkal west district unit, for showing black flags to the Governor when his convoy passed through Paramathi road. A black flag was also thrown at the Governor’s car. Of them, 32 women were let off in the evening.
Police sources said that cases were registered against the remaining 192 DMK cadre under Sections 124 IPC (assaulting President, Governor etc); 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant); 143 (unlawful assembly); and Section 71 (a) Criminal Law Amendment Act.
They were produced in the Judicial Magistrate Court II in the late evening and remanded in judicial custody for 15 days. All of them were lodged in the Salem Central Prison in small hours of Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Namakkal police rounded up about 75 DMK cadre on Saturday when they organised demonstration at four places in the district to condemn the arrest of DMK working president M. K. Stalin in Chennai and also the detention of the 192 DMK cadre of Namakkal district. Police sources said that while 22 DMK cadre were rounded up in Namakkal town, 20 were picked up in Erumappadi, 19 in Rasipuram and another 14 in Paramathivelur town.
