The government has earmarked ₹1.30 crore as maintenance subsidy for government schools in the district under the Sarva Sikhsha Abhiyan (SSA) programme, said V. Sampath, District Collector.
This programme will benefit a total of 1,738 government schools functioning in the district, he said while speaking at a meeting to review the progress of the SSA programme here recently.
The government has sanctioned subsidy assistance to the tune of ₹77.60 lakh to 1,552 government and government aided elementary schools at the rate of ₹5,000 each and another ₹48.37 lakh to 691 government and aided middle schools at the rate of ₹7,000 each.
He said that during the current academic year (2017-18), a total of 17,046 students were admitted in class one in 1,752 government schools under the SSA programme.
The government has provided assistance, equipment, training, medical screening camps for the benefit of 6,097 differently abled students under the SSA programme in the district in the recent past. Training was also imparted to the parents of the differently abled children.
A total of 1,279 computers were provided to the computer centres of 512 government schools.
Dropouts
The officials and staff of the block resource centres functioning under SSA played a key role in the re-enrolment of the students who had earlier dropped out of the schools due to various reasons. The teachers of the schools and the staff of the block resource centres conducted door-to-door survey in both the urban centres and villages during the summer holidays and identified 1,125 school drop-out boys and girls.
Already 906 students have been admitted to regular schools, special centres and residential special training centres. Steps are already on for streamlining and admitting the rest of the students too in the regular schools after imparting adequate training to them.
Thirteen Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya schools that catered to the educational needs of girls belonging to the weaker sections are functioning in 12 blocks that are educationally backward in the districts. These schools are run under the SSA programme.
About 930 girls in the age group of 10 – 14 years, who had dropped out of regular schools, have been admitted to these schools, the Collector said.
